Swimming for Weight Loss? Here are our Top Tips.

If you’re wanting to lose weight, swimming can be an effective way of burning calories and getting your cardio in - especially if it’s hot outside!

To get the most out of your swim workouts, follow these top tips.

1. Increase Your Tempo

One of the benefits of swimming is that you can easily control your pace and intensity. If you’re wanting to burn as many calories as possible, it is advisable that you swim harder and faster.

Test out different strokes to find out which challenges you the most, and always aim to swim faster than before.

2. Swim First Thing in the Morning

Doing any form of exercise first thing in the morning, before eating is a good way of losing weight. This is because it leaves your body in a fasted state where it is ready to burn energy that is stored as fat.

3. Take a Swim Class

Swim classes can be beneficial even if you have been swimming for years. Having someone to teach you proper stroke techniques and how to manage your pace will help you significantly in the long term. It will also draw attention to any bad techniques you’ve picked up that may be limiting your swimming ability or causing injury.

4. Aim to Swim 4 to 5 Times a Week

Regardless of your workout, if your goal is to lose weight, you should be aiming to exercise 4 to 5 times a week.

This will provide your body with sufficient energy output, without pushing it too hard and causing injury.

5. Use Water Weights

A great way to lose weight and tone your body is to use water weights. As the water creates resistance, doing a few bicep curls with water dumbbells can help build strength and endurance.

6. Mix-Up your Swim Routine

Frequent, monotonous exercise can get boring and throw you off your weight loss journey. In order to prevent this, it’s a good idea to mix up your swim routine.

Try experimenting with different strokes and swim equipment. Also consider other water-based workouts such as aqua aerobics and water polo.

7. Swim with Music!

Swimming with music (or your favourite podcast) is another excellent way of keeping your workouts exciting! Listening to high-tempo music while you swim too, can help you swim faster, at a greater intensity.
